Library Based Program

The Newberry County Library and Newberry County First Steps have been partnering for many years, which is in keeping with the Legislature’s 2014-2015 focus on language and literacy development.

Providing early literacy skills is foundational to language development and school readiness. Our Library-Based Program is designed to provide literacy activities for 3 and 4 year old's enrolled in preschool programs in Newberry County.

Each class receives twice a month visits by the Outreach Librarian. Children receive a book each month to add to their own personal library and books are given to each classroom library. Reading, rhyming, singing, and talking influence literacy and language development, the foundations for all other learning. Children introduced to reading early on tend to read earlier and excel in school compared to children who are not exposed to language and books at a young age (American Academy of Pediatrics).

The Outreach Librarian also serves as a training model for teachers and child care staff, as well as providing a positive learning experience for approximately 600 participating children.
