Parents as Teachers is a national, evidence-based home visitation model designed to ensure young children are healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Services are delivered by model-certified parent educators who emphasize parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting and family well-being. First Steps has served as the lead agency for Parents as Teachers in South Carolina since 2011.

Knowing that parents are a child’s first and best teachers, Frist Steps collaborates with the School District of Newberry County to employ parent educators who make at least 2 visits per month in eligible families’ homes. These educators teach good nutrition, how to care for your child, how to interact and read with your child, and acceptable discipline methods.

Families attend group meetings on child development and other parenting practices. Children receive screenings and assessments in order to identify issues early and make referrals for early intervention to community services.

Providing a home visiting program that works, not only with the child, but the whole family, builds thriving families and children who are healthy, safe and ready to succeed.

Certificate of Completion for the PAT program.
